Police HQ respond to video of personnel using cutlass to beat civilians after Aba station is burnt down
Following the attack at the Abayi police station located at the World Bank Housing Estate Aba, Abia State on Tuesday morning, some members of the Nigerian police have been seen arresting and assaulting innocent citizens as a form of ‘retaliation’.
A Nigerian man identified as Harrison Mbamara has shared an amateur video which captures the moment when some police officers were seen flogging Abia residents with machetes.
This kind of video is enough to start an uprising. Whatever the offence is, police officers have no right to attack the people they are meant to protect in such a manner — not every civilian is a criminal.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) has reacted to the video shared by Harrison Mbamara on Twitter. The CRU replied to his tweet, saying:
“Kindly avail this unit the contact of the victim via our DM, also send us the location where this act took place, this is not the true reflection of the NPF.”
However, two police officers were reportedly killed in the Abayi police station attack by suspected hoodlums who looted several arms and burned down the station.
