‘ For the first time ever, the #BETAwards2018 Best International Act category winner will be presented on the main stage.’  This was announced on May 16th, 2018, via the Twitter handle of BET Africa and as Africans, we should celebrate it. It is plus points for African music, cheering news for African artistes and good to see organisers of the BET Awards finally take to correction. This singular step would put an end to the many years of discrimination against Africans on a platform that takes pride in “celebrating black excellence.” BET Awards was launched in 2001 but the Best International Acts Category wasn’t introduced until ten years after, at the 2011 edition of the awards. The news of the recognition swept across the continent, causing excitement and pride to fill the hearts of Africans, many of whom took it as a sign of acceptance and validation from the International community. The excitement lasted till the ceremony where the winners – 2Baba & D’Banj never got to climb

​ The BET Best International Act award would be presented on the main stage for the first time ever at the 2018 edition of the awards. For many years since the existence of the BET Awards, the winners of the Best International Act category received their prize behind the curtains. The likes of Davido, Wizkid, 2baba, D’banj, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie were winners of the award in those days. Following intense pressure from the International music community, especially from artistes like Wizkid and Yemi Alade, the organisers of the BET Awards have now made a move to give victors in the ‘Best International Act’ category better recognition. It was recently announced via the official social handle of BET Africa that the winner of the 2018 edition of the Best International Act category would receive his/her prize on the main stage. The list of the potential winners of the award was recently published and it includes names like; Davido, Tiwa Savage, Nasty C, Stormzy (of UK) among others. See

Davido and Tiwa Savage have been announced amongst the nominees for the 2018 BET Awards. The nominees’ list was made public on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 and the two pop stars were listed in the Best International Act category. The 2018 BET Awards is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 25, 2018, at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California, United States. The organizers of the awards published the list of nominees for the respective categories and the one of most interest to Nigerians is the category for Best International Music Act, which features Davido and Tiwa Savage amongst other first-rate artistes across the world. In 2014 Davido claimed the award for BET Best International Act: Africa, beating Diamond Platnumz, Mafikizolo, Sarkodie, Tiwa Savage and Toofan. The DMW singer is a favorite for this year’s edition of the award.
