Appeal Court frees ex-NIMASA DG Akpobolokemi

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal Friday discharged and acquitted a former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, who was charged with an alleged fraud of N2.6 billion. Delivering a lead judgment in a three-judge panel, Yargatta Nimpar, said they unanimously upheld the no-case submission filed by Mr Akpolokemi in response to the criminal charges. The Appeal Court overruled the decision of Ibrahim Buba, a judge of the Federal High Court in Lagos, who, on October 16, 2017, dismissed the NIMASA boss’s no-case submission. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 4, 2015, arraigned Mr Akpobolokemi alongside five others for allegedly diverting N2.6 billion from the coffers of NIMASA between December 2013 and May 2014. The funds, the EFCC claimed, were approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan for the implementation of a security project tagged, “International Ship and Ports Security Code in Nigerian

Supreme Court orders Akingbola to face his N5bn trial

The Supreme Court has ordered a former Managing Director of the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, to return to the Federal High Court in Lagos to face his trial on N5bn fraud charges. The trial was prematurely terminated in April 2012 by Justice Charles Archibong, whose decision in the case later earned him a compulsory retirement from the bench. A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Tanko Muhammad unanimously affirmed the February 20, 2015, judgment of the Court of Appeal in Lagos which had overturned the Federal High Court’s decision striking out the charges. Justice Sidi Bage, who read the lead judgment of the apex court, said Akingbola’s appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s verdict lacked merit. He ordered that the case be remitted to the Federal High Court and handled by another judge in the Lagos Division and be given “expeditions trial”. Presidential candidate of the APC, Gen Buhari says those who are aggrieved about his certificate and the issues surrounding it should go to court and remain there. He said this while speaking with some journalists after members of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM came to show their solidarity in the forthcoming election. He said that INEC said it has received his document and that anyone who has a contrary view to this is free to head to the court

A legal practitioner, Mr. Chukwunweike Okafor, yesterday Monday, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja with an application seeking a declaration that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), lacked the educational qualification to stand for the February 14 presidential election. The originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/01/2015, according to  PUNCH , has Buhari, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission as the first, second and third defendants  respectively.

Lil Wayne Leaves Cash Money, Sues Birdman for $8M

Birdman and Lil Wayne have officially declared war. Settlement talks have broken down and Wayne will now sue his mentor, claiming among other things Birdman owes him $8 million. As  TMZ  reported, the 2 titans tried coming to terms this week but it wasn't meant to be. Now Wayne will ask a judge to declare him free of Cash Money and Birdman's control. Wayne says Birdman has violated their contract by withholding the release of his new album. As for the $8 MIL claim, Wayne says Birdman owed the money for his latest album -- it was supposed to be an advance.

A woman was arrested on charges of rape after allegedly raping a young man until his private parts became swollen, police in South Africa said. Limpopo Police said that the 46-year-old woman of Bolobedu, who was accused of raping the 22-year-old man, was released from custody after posting R1,000 ($86) bail.
