“…I must say that I am morally outraged by the facts of this case; the people of Taraba State had elected the defendant, a clergyman, on three different occasions; their expectations must have been very high.  “How would he begin to explain to the people of Taraba State his actions? How would he explain such a colossal loss to the people?…” The above quote was an extract from the concluding statements in the ruling of an Abuja Federal High court judge, Adebukola Banjoko, on the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, a reverend. The ex-governor was on Wednesday convicted of misappropriating N1.64 billion from the state’s treasury through shoddy stationery contracts which he awarded at the tail of his eight years administration that ended in 2007. Again, gunmen kidnap 15 in Kaduna

Some suspected bandits have kidnapped at least 15 persons along the Funtua-Birnin-Gwari Road in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. It was gathered that the incident took place at about 3.30pm between Kiryoyi and Maganda villages in the local government area. A member of the Birnin Gwari branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the 15 persons were abducted while travelling in five vehicles. The source said that the abductors took the mobile devices and valuables belonging to the abductees after ordering them to get out of their vehicles. Appeal Court frees ex-NIMASA DG Akpobolokemi

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal Friday discharged and acquitted a former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, who was charged with an alleged fraud of N2.6 billion. Delivering a lead judgment in a three-judge panel, Yargatta Nimpar, said they unanimously upheld the no-case submission filed by Mr Akpolokemi in response to the criminal charges. The Appeal Court overruled the decision of Ibrahim Buba, a judge of the Federal High Court in Lagos, who, on October 16, 2017, dismissed the NIMASA boss’s no-case submission. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 4, 2015, arraigned Mr Akpobolokemi alongside five others for allegedly diverting N2.6 billion from the coffers of NIMASA between December 2013 and May 2014. The funds, the EFCC claimed, were approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan for the implementation of a security project tagged, “International Ship and Ports Security Code in Nigerian

Russian pilot who was missing presumed dead after his plane was shot down three decades ago during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan has been found alive and wants to come home, Russian military veterans said Friday. “He is still alive. It’s very astonishing. Now he needs help,” the head of the paratroopers’ union Valery Vostrotin told RIA Novosti state news agency. Vostrotin, who heads the Russian side of a Russian-US joint commission on prisoners-of-war and soldiers missing in action, declined to name the pilot for reasons of confidentiality. The man was shot down in 1987 and is likely now to be over 60, the deputy head of veteran’s organisation Battle Brotherhood, Vyacheslav Kalinin, told the news agency, adding that he now wants to come home. He suggested that the pilot could be in Pakistan, where Afghanistan had camps for prisoners of war. UN plane crashes in DR Congo, injures five

Five people were injured when a small plane operated by the UN’s humanitarian air service overturned on the runway in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, the organisation said. The accident happened during take off on a remote runway in Kamonia, in central Kasai region, according to statement from the UN World Food Programme (WFP), which runs the UN air service, UNHAS. “The two crew members and three passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local medical facility,” it added. The cause of the accident is being investigated. The WFP said the group was made up of two Ugandan crew and a French, Chadian and Congolese national, all of whom were not WFP employees. The small Cessna Caravan plane, chartered by the UN Humanitarian Air Service, “got stuck in the sand and overturned,” said local Congolese official Jean Paul Kuzuka, adding that the poor condition of the runway was the main cause of the accident. ​ The Chairman, PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Wayne  Aboderin, is dead. He died on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 6.05am after a heart surgery at the First Cardiology Consultants, Ikoyi, Lagos, at the age of 60. He was also Chairman, PUNCH Commercial Printing Limited  and  Lukahed Properties Limited. He attended the Government College, Ibadan; and trained as a pilot in the United States. A sports enthusiast and philanthropist, he was the founder and chairman of  the Dolphins Female  Basketball Foundation, and also a former chairman of the Lagos State Basketball Association. PUNCH Chairman, Gbadebowale Aboderin, dies at 60

​ The Chairman, PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Wayne  Aboderin, is dead. He died on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 6.05am after a heart surgery at the First Cardiology Consultants, Ikoyi, Lagos, at the age of 60. He was also Chairman, PUNCH Commercial Printing Limited  and  Lukahed Properties Limited. He attended the Government College, Ibadan; and trained as a pilot in the United States. A sports enthusiast and philanthropist, he was the founder and chairman of  the Dolphins Female  Basketball Foundation, and also a former chairman of the Lagos State Basketball Association. He was a one-time vice-president of the Nigerian Basketball Supporters Club. He is survived by his wife, Titilayo, and children. Details later…
