The Supreme Court has ordered a former Managing Director of the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, to return to the Federal High Court in Lagos to face his trial on N5bn fraud charges. The trial was prematurely terminated in April 2012 by Justice Charles Archibong, whose decision in the case later earned him a compulsory retirement from the bench. A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Tanko Muhammad unanimously affirmed the February 20, 2015, judgment of the Court of Appeal in Lagos which had overturned the Federal High Court’s decision striking out the charges. Justice Sidi Bage, who read the lead judgment of the apex court, said Akingbola’s appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s verdict lacked merit. He ordered that the case be remitted to the Federal High Court and handled by another judge in the Lagos Division and be given “expeditions trial”. Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, who was poisoned with a nerve agent in Britain, triggering a diplomatic crisis with Russia, has been discharged from hospital, the facility said Friday. “It is fantastic news that Sergei Skripal is well enough to leave Salisbury District Hospital,” Cara Charles-Barks, the hospital’s chief executive, said in a statement. Director of Nursing Lorna Wilkinson said: “This is an important stage in his recovery, which will now take place away from the hospital. “Treating him and the other two people poisoned by this nerve agent, while still providing outstanding care to the other patients who rely on our hospital, has been a huge and unprecedented challenge,” he said. Ogembo residents had waited to have the newly constructed Ogembo Nyakorokoro footbridge inaugurated. And on Friday (today), the wait was over, as Governor Mutua, aided by the Deputy Governor of Kisii, was on hand to declare the footbridge open. It turned out that the contractor did a shoddy job, as the footbridge gave way under the weight of dignitaries and villagers who had trooped out to celebrate the august event. Nigerians on social media have reacted to a video of the Inspector General of Police,Ibrahim Idris, struggling to read a speech in Kano. In the viral video, the IG, who visited Kano on Monday to commission the Police Technical Intelligence unit in the State stammered severally as he struggled to pronounce his words. After failed attempts to get his speech right, the IGP, apologised to his audience. The clip, however,, stirred up reactions online as Nigerians mocked him for his inability to read his prepared speech. Some described the situation as ’embarrassing and a shame to the Nigeria Police force. ​ The Commissioner of police in Lagos state, Edgal Imohimi, says any medical doctor that refuses to treat gunshot victims in the state are  criminally liable. The commissioner said this in a statement while reacting to a media report that doctors at the Reddington hospital in Ikeja, Lagos rejected one Engineer Adebayo Akinwunmi who suffered bullet wounds after armed robbers attacked his home in Ofada-Mokoloki, Ogun state recently. The hospital had reportedly rejected the victim on the grounds that there was no police report. The police boss in the statement released by the command’s PRO, SP Chike Oti, described the hospital’s action as cruel. T.I Arrested Near Atlanta. T.I. was arrested in Henry County near Atlanta early Wednesday morning, Channel 2 Action News reports. The veteran rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., was arrested after returning to his gated community around 4 a.m. According to the report, T.I. did not have his key for entry and argued with a guard who refused to give him access, Henry County police said. The rapper then called a friend to join him and that’s when things escalated. The Henry County Police Department was called to the scene and T.I. and his friend were arrested. According to the police, Tip’s friend had a warrant out for his arrest. They were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He has since been bonded out.
